Safer Streets

DOREEN is seeking assurances about the future of the crossing patrols at the Corner House and at Cragside following suggestions that the Labour council is  reducing spend on schemes from £190,000 to £100,000 next year. We are especially opposed to any plans to remove the crossing patrols at the Corner House given the danger from Coast Road traffic and at Cragside.

We continue to press the council for information on the promised safer route to school “DIY Streets” plan for Ravenswood School – it is months overdue and the latest proposals are for spending up to £200,000 on what are essentially minor cosmetic improvements on Stanmore Road in South Heaton – we feel this is not the best use of available funding. We gather that Sustrans are now objecting to what the council highways engineers are proposing – it’s a mess.

However, we are pleased to learn that the council has finally agreed a framework for purchasing additional driver feedback speed warning signs with a supplier after literally years of delay and dithering. DOREEN has been campaigning for years to get these movable signs introduced at key locations in Cochrane Park such as Etherstone Avenue, Vancouver Drive, Cochrane Park Avenue, and Martello Gardens. The council has no more excuses for not acting – we want progress.
